Generation 2

Edison TRICKETT  was born July 11, 1916.  He died February 24,1999.   Edison was the third son of William Joseph TRICKETT and Jean Robertson GIFFEN.   He married Joyce Marie LEEBRICK on April 5, 1947, in Rockville, Maryland. They were married (nearly 52 years) until his death in 1999 .   I feel fortunate and extremely proud to say that I am one of the couple's children.   It is known that his children remember Edison as “Dad, our hero”.

He was born in Gilmore, Maryland and grew up in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, near the Maryland and West Virginia borders.  He was tall, rangy and athletic.  He often told stories of coal mining in his teens, of playing ball under the only gas light in town, and running back and forth to the nearby town, more than 10 miles roundtrip, just for the fun of it!

Although he served in the Marines, in Guam and the Philippines in World War II, he never talked much about it, except for rare references to the malaria he picked up there.  He did like to laugh about the way the troop ships made everyone, especially him, seasick.

One story he told was when he and fellow Marines were in California preparing to depart for the Pacific Front.   Each morning for some period of days his company would march with full packs, weapons and all their gear down to the troop ship where they climbed the sides draped with cargo nets, with all that weight, to the deck.
They were sent down below decks while many more troops were loaded onboard.   When all troops were in place on board, they were told to reverse the process, go back down the boarding nets and march back to the barracks.  This must have been to practice and re-practice the loading and unloading of the ship until the officers felt it was done to their satisfaction.
On one of these mornings, after he was deep within the ship and was feeling the movement of it, he and others were told they could go topside for fresh air.  He said on reaching the deck he realized the threat of leaving had come true and the base was getting smaller in the distance!   It was on to the Pacific Front!

After the war he worked at the Dr. Pepper bottling plant in Washington, D.C. where he put his Electrical Engineering education to work updating the production line.  He then joined RCA in Washington where he stayed for the next 30 years.

He was an avid gardener, raising everything from tomatoes and peppers to eggplant and kohlrabi.  When he wasn't gardening he was building and fixing things.  Edison could fix or build anything, often it seemed, through sheer willpower!  More than once we saw him grind or bend an old tool to create an entirely new one. He was an early proponent of repurposing!

Edison, who filled out to 6 feet tall and 205 pounds, was a tremendous athlete.  We never saw anything he couldn't do. Football, baseball, basketball, it didn't matter.  He could hit a baseball out of sight.  He could throw a football sixty yards on a line.  Through the years, Edison always had time for his children and spent countless hours after work with them playing football, baseball and other sports or games.

It should be mentioned that our father Edison wasn't the only exceptional athlete in the Trickett family.  My brother Ron  and I remember playing in several family baseball games and by baseball, I mean hardball, not softball, in the mid-1960's. These included our Dad, his father, William (who was nearly 80 at the time and played the outfield without a glove!), his brother, George and our half-brother, Ed who was even sought after by major league scouts.  And I'm here to tell you that everyone could flat out play!  Ed, who is a professor of psychology also taught at Yale University, at Maryland University, at the University of Chicago and is currently in 2020 at the University of Miami. He was also a very popular folk music artist with many recorded albums to his credit.

Joyce Marie (LEEBRICK) TRICKETT  was born March 12, 1930. Joyce died, sadly, suddenly and very unexpectedly on October 24, 2009 in the hospital while undergoing medical tests.  Joyce married Edison Trickett on April 5, 1947 in Rockville, Maryland.  She was 17 and had to get permission from her father, Frank, to wed.  Edison and Joyce were married for nearly 52 years when Edison died in 1999.  Joyce Marie managed her seven member family as a joy and an art . Her pleasant countenance and loving care were always a blessing to our family.
She was born in St. Mary’s, Pleasants County, West Virginia.  It was established in 1849 by Alexander Creel, who is said to have had a 'vision of Mary' while passing the site by boat on the Ohio River.  Train tracks run down the middle of 2nd Street, and freight trains running through the middle of downtown St. Mary’s are a common sight.  It is one of the few towns in the country where freight trains actually share city streets with automotive traffic.

Her parents were Frank Lee LEEBRICK Sr. and Clara Marie (DELORME) LEEBRICK

William Joseph TRICKETT  was born 22 Jan 1885.  He died 4 May 1970.  He married Jean Robertson GIFFEN around 1908, a union that lasted for more than 61 years.  William died in 1970 at age 85, less than a year after Jean's death.  She died 23 Oct 1969.

He was 6 feet 2 inches tall, redheaded, lanky and handsome.  His hands, inherited from his father, were incredibly large.  So large, in fact (my father, Edison, often said), that he could hide a baseball in a closed fist!  And they were tremendously strong hands; strength no doubt developed as a young man working a pick ax in the Pennsylvania mines.  He also worked as a union representative for the mine workers.  He escaped the mines, moving his family from Uniontown Pa. to Washington D.C. but not before he was nearly crushed to death by a coal slab that left his back flecked with blue shale.

Joseph was with General Washington’s staff and was at the Battle of Yorktown and the surrender of British forces. After the war he taught school and was the Commissioner of Revenue in Monongalia County, Virginia.

Shortly thereafter, they settled in Monongalia County Virginia, on a farm on Joe's Run near the little town of Smithtown about twelve miles south of Morgantown.   Joseph taught school and from 1796 to 1805 served as Commissioner of Revenue of the Western District.  Joseph's will was dated August 6, 1805.

Generation 8

Thomas TRICKETT  was born in England 1730.  He died 1815.  As far as I know, all of our Trickett’s are descended from Thomas Trickett.  He married Hanna Turner around 1750.

Thomas and Hannah lived in England.  Their daughter-in-law, Margaret, was appointed administrator of Thomas's estate in Monongalia Co., WV, on 13 Nov 1815.  Margaret Trickett's statement of 27 Nov 1817 was made to establish claim to eight acres of land near London, England.  The land was bequeathed to her deceased husband, Joseph Trickett, and their son, William, by Hannah.  The income was to be given to Joseph and William.

Ron Trickett found a reference to Thomas's father Adam and his grandfather Thomas on the web, but there was not enough information to confirm the relationships.

He Married:  Hanna TURNER
They had the following children: Joseph TRICKETT was born 18 Aug 1755 and died 15 Oct 1805.
Generation 1

Wayne Frederick TRICKETT  was born August 3, 1948 in Washington D.C.   My birth parents were William Joseph VOGEL, born 12-25-1921 - died 6-23-1976 and Doris Elizabeth (LEEBRICK) VOGEL, born 1-12-1922 - died 10-16-1948. Doris and her four children were in a house fire 9-5-1948.   Sadly, due to injuries suffered in that fire, she died on 10-16-1948.   I was about one month old at the time of that fire.   Doris was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on 10-19-1948.   William VOGEL was buried in Arlington Cemetery 6-28-1976 with his wife Doris Elizabeth.

Doris Elizabeth (LEEBRICK) VOGEL and Joyce Marie (LEEBRICK) TRICKETT were cousins within the large LEEBRICK family.   For reasons unknown to me, William VOGEL did not continue to raise his four young children, Billy aged 6, Carol aged 5, Ernie aged 4 and Wayne aged 2 months, after Doris’s death.

Consequently three of the older Vogel children, Billy, Carol and Ernie were raised by their grandmother Ruby Elizabeth (Melrose) LEEBRICK and her son, their uncle, John Nicholas LEEBRICK Jr.,  Doris’s older brother.   He has always been called “Uncle Johnny” by all our family.   I,  being an infant,  was adopted within the family by Joyce Marie (LEEBRICK) TRICKETT and Edison TRICKETT.   It could appear that kismet or destiny played a role in my future in 1948, as Edison and Joyce would lose their first born child, a son, who was born and died on 10-11-1949.

Edison and Joyce raised their new infant son and as time took its course their family also grew.   Brother Ronald Lynn TRICKETT (Ron)  was born in 1950; sister Joyce Marie TRICKETT (Sissy)  was born in 1952; sister Marlena Jane TRICKETT (Mar)  was born  in 1954 and sister Virginia Faye TRICKETT (Ginny)  was born  in 1961.

I was raised with wonderful family connections to all of my TRICKETT/LEEBRICK relatives, including those with Ruby LEEBRICK as "Aunt Ruby",  John Nicholas LEEBRICK Jr.  as "Uncle Johnny" and  Billy, Carol and  Ernie as my "cousins".  Being raised by Joyce and Edison TRICKETT gave all the advantages that one could hope for, these being a life with loving parents, brothers and sisters, grandmothers and grandfathers, plus a myriad of caring relatives to be taught by, protected by and even chastised by, always with love and my best interests at heart.

He married (1) Shelley Rae EICKENBERG in Washington D.C. on May 31,1969.

Matthew Edison TRICKETT born April 1, 1975,  Sarah Kathleen TRICKETT born June  15, 1977

He also married (2) Pamela Lohr ROBERTS  in Leesburg VA. on December 24,1986

*Doris Elizabeth (Leebrick) Vogel
and Joyce Marie (Leebrick) Trickett
were first cousins.
